Lokye is a rapper from New York. "Color Coated 2" is a snapshot of his laid back, raw, city lifestyle. There are a lot of sung vocals, but the album is undeniably hip hop focused. Lokye's rap skills are good, but the strongest aspect of this album is the vibe. It's stoner-friendly in the production and lyracism, but it isn't lazily put together. Lokye has made a very high quality album to get high to. There isn't much depth, but to be fair the intended audience may not want or appreciate that. This stacks up to the artists in his lane, but his success may be based on how well he can stand out in the future. Gimmicky flashy rappers have had better luck in straight-forward hip hop success.
Playboi Carti is a rapper from Atlanta Georgia. Using his ties to Asap Mob, it seemed like he began rapping when he got famous. His music was barely lyrical. However, his lack of experience gave him an originality that led to his own style. Playboi Carti is a character and a brand first and a musician second. His confidence is mind-blowing but refreshing. This album sounds like he's been practicing and focusing on quality. The breakdowns have a growl that is more universal than screaming but just as lit. The collaborations he pulled off and production value make it seem like Carti is going to be very prominent on hip hop's forefront this year. Good job Carti.
