Earl Sweatshirt has a finesse that works. However, his new writing style is about not caring. If you want to make a jingle or a universal anthem, the beat needs to be better. His name is becoming his selling feature artistically, but his reputation is well-deserved.

The infamous Earl Sweatshirt is back with a new album. Although he's dropped a lot of off-beat spoken word teaser tracks, all of this album is surprisingly on beat. Where this album shines is it is the inverse of most rap artist's music. The aesthetic is very urban, gritty, and authentically hip hop in the vibe, but the lyrics and presentation is very much... structurally... American? Nationalism literate? He knows a lot about what's going on, but he doesn't try to assimilate. This album succeeds in both contexts. The weakness is Earl is too artistic to even try to make jingles or melodies so casual listeners will probably not enjoy this much; but that's not who listens to his music anyway.

Overview Earl Sweatshirt rose to fame as the infamous secret weapon from the rap collective, Odd Future. Feet Of Clay is different. The production is nearly drum-less and he ignores the tempo often. Even though it's an acquired taste musically, it's original, spoken-word inspired, and most importantly, it doesn't feel like hip hop. The instrumentals are some of the most abstract I've ever heard a rap on. It's much better than "Some Rap Songs" but it couldn't hold a candle to "Earl". "No regards for the bullsh*t". Earl has a very mature take on a lot of current events. This is the most cultured and sophisticated hip hop album released with it's prominence.
Defining Track
EAST is as political as the name implies. He questions everything in his life with an awareness higher than every genre's norm. It's hookless but is short enough to not leave you searching for one. It's a good song but would be far from anyone's favorite Earl song.
Final Thoughts
Earl pioneered a level of clout that lingers over this release. His vision of the world is much deeper than most and this is his most sophisticated release.
Overview
Earl Sweatshirt is a rapper from Ladera Heights, California. He achieved fame from Odd Future's free Earl campaign. Pioneering tongue twisters while using assonance and alliteration like early Eminem; he's abandoned trying to impress his audience with his intelligence. This album is more about originality and laid back vibes. It takes a bit of an adjustment, but it's good in it's own way.
Defining Track
Nowhere2go is written like a piece of performance art. Like most of this album, it's more of a classy experience than a musical endeavor.
Final Thoughts
Earl is good, but this is not a reflection of how talented he is. He seems to be coasting on his name and trying to silence his criticizers from the last album. It's more simplistic and laid back, his delivery is harder, and the production is abstract and varied. Some Rap Songs feels as effortless as the title. He's still cool, but really technically proficient artists like Earl and Eminem tend to prioritize showing off lyricism rather than making songs that sound good.
