Jhene Aiko is an R&B singer from Los Angeles California. Although she has had very little exposure in the mainstream, she is highly prominent in rap culture. Appropriately, the hip hop influenced moments of this album are the high-points and most original parts. She's very understated, but there's a humility and earthiness that comes with that; that's very infectious. She's very bold about her heritage. The ethnic aesthetic is soothing because it's not negative or vane. Jhene Aiko doesn't have much of a message or agenda, she's a girl trying to find love. While that may seem boring, she's so analytical about her romances that it isn't one dimensional. Westside Whimsy is good, but not great and for the anti-elitism culture that may be perfect.
