The artists that challenge stereotypes are a select few. That's why a big part of self-acceptance is embracing those very stereotypes. Rappers imitate the thug archetype Tupac created, but even Tupac felt limited by it. He was a very intelligent person that they oppressively branded that way. 

Has technology made thug power weak and trivial? Has evolution replaced all moral codes? Has brainwashing created a criticalness to thug culture that's more social than it is rational?
